Traffic data collection or Traffic Surveys
The basis for problem identification of transport infrastructure, quantifying the impact of changes, and determining the nature or magnitude of required developments. In other words, a specific county with a population measuring 1.70 million in the year 2001 is projected to have a population of 3.15 million in 2020 and a projected annual traffic growth of 8%. With such scenario it is obvious that the vehicles using the public roadways network will increase substantially hence indicating potential demand for investments in transport infrastructure. Proper utilization of such huge investments requires systematic planning for need-based development. Such developments include determination of the required capacity expansion, provision of introducing additional roadways into the existing network, improvement of existing roads and forecasting of which is possible upon collection of traffic data. The accuracy of traffic data collection is of highest importance for an appropriate planning, design, maintenance monitoring and management of the roadways network.
Traffic counts are the most basic type of data collected in the field of traffic engineering. In simple terms traffic counts involve counting of vehicles in junction/location for varying intervals of time. The interval can range from 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, to five minutes of a peak period. The magnitude of traffic data required or to be collected determines its quality and type of vehicle classification adopted. Traffic counting is done under two main categories i.e. Manual counting or Video counts and automatic counts (Automatic traffic recorders (ATRs)). The most common method is Manual counts where traffic flow data is manually counted by deploying a person on the location to count. But as the technology is improvising the Manual count is replaced by Video counts where cameras are used to record the location at specified interval and later, they are counted manually using the recorded footages. In automatic counts, the ATR’s are installed and continuous traffic volumes by direction are counted. These devices utilize permanent sensors, such as induction loop detectors or Pneumatic tubes, which are installed directly into each lane of pavement at a count location. An inductive-loop detector senses the presence of a metal object by inducing currents in the object. The data is often used to find the speed by analyzing the time it takes a vehicle to pass through the loops installed in series. Power and a communication link must be available at each location to allow for the continuous operation of the ATR.
